When the Body Attacks Itself
This month’s Awareness Campaign is the Lupus Foundation of America. The suggestion came from an employee whose family was affected by lupus when a sibling’s life was cut short by the painful disease. The Lupus Foundation is devoted to solving the mystery of lupus, one of the world’s cruelest, most unpredictable, and devastating diseases, while giving caring support to those who suffer from its brutal impact.
Lupus is sometimes called “the great imitator” because its symptoms are often like the symptoms of so many other dieseases – rheumatoid arthritis, blood disorders, fibromyalgia, diabetes, thyroid problems, Lyme disease, and a number of heart, lung, muscle, and bone diseases. Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or organs). Click to learn more on lupus.org’s Understanding Lupus page.
In lupus, something goes wrong with the immune system, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria, and germs (“foreign invaders,” like the flu). Normally our immune systems produce proteins called “antibodies” which protect the body from these invaders. “Autoimmunity” means your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign invaders and your body’s healthy tissues and as a result, it creates autoantibodies that attack and destroy healthy tissue. This is what causes the inflammation, pain, and damage to the individual’s body.
There is much genetic research bringing new understanding to lupus and it’s diagnosis and treatment. More in the last decade than the past 100 years. The prognosis of lupus is better today than ever before. With close follow-up and treatment, 80-90% of people with lupus can expect to live a normal life span.
We encourage you to learn more about it and be aware of the help available from the Lupus Foundation of America. Please help the Bauer family of companies reach our goal of 500 social media shares and likes of our posts to spread the word and allow us to make a full donation with your support.
